The beautiful of Salzburg

After visiting all the most famous attractions in Salzburg, we found ourselves with a bit of free time. What better way to end a day in the city than walking around and letting our feet lead the way? This is the only way to find little gems that would otherwise go unnoticed, like the shop that sells nothing but Easter eggs in all shapes and colors, or the angels and saints that lurk on the corners of small palaces, watching over the streets. Salzburg Barrocco

It is snowing as I cross the River Salzach towards Salzburg’s labyrinthine old town planted below Festung Hohensalzburg, the towering fortress dating from 1077. The snow falls in asymmetrical and irregular waves, blowing across the icy blue river as if it were trying to settle the ruffling waves, as a tender hand might. I see the light-blue dome of the Cathedral, a masterpiece of Baroque architecture, standing over the buildings along the river. The snow billows and swells. There is neither order nor romance to it. It is disorganized and impetuous. The flakes are not rotund or large; they are closer to raindrops than snowflakes. It is not the snow you cozily walk hand-in-hand with someone through, glancing half-heartedly at window-shops by lantern light. It is not the snow that falls so lackadaisically that you can follow a single flake drop from the heavens. And as I enter the twisting, cobbled streets of the opulent old-town, I spot an Irish bar and take refuge from the weather. The city frowns.
