The Clock Tower

3 reviews of The Clock Tower

Symbol of the city!

Great

University Tower (or Clock Tower) is Baroque and is in one of the two corners of the courtyard of the Old University (Largo da Porta Ferrea). It was built 1728-1733 and is considered one of the symbols of Coimbra, Portugal. It's square, 33 meters high and at the top (on each side of the tower) there are clocks and bells that once governed the lives of the students and the whole city, hence it's popularly called "La Torre de la Cabra". At the top there's a viewpoint with magnificent city views. It's accessed via a spiral staircase and therefore goes unnoticed - I recommend a visit.
