The mural fresco by Michelangelo to decorate the apse of the Sistine Chapel, he began painting 25 years after finishing painting the ceiling of the chapel. Until 1536, the altar wall where thee's now the Last Judgment murals had other stories of Moses and Jesus (Assumption, Nativity of Christ). In mid-1533, Clement VII entrusted the execution of two frescoes on the front walls of the Sistine Chapel depicting the Last Judgment on the wall where the altar, and the Resurrection, on the opposite wall. The death of Clement VII in September 1534 caused a slight drop in the project until it is recovered by his successor, Paul III.
