The thing that really caught my attention about this place was the design of its interiors, which features some recycled materials. The atmosphere is very nice to enjoy a meal and have a good time in good company. When you arrive, you can sit at the bar and start by trying a Vino Veritas, the house wine, to whet your appetite. Then, you can go to a table or, if you like, you can choose to go to the VIP area. Even though the slogan of this restaurant is "Contemporary Mexican Food", actually the dishes come more in the category of fusion-gourmet food. The originality of the recipes lies with the Mexican ingredients and traditional Oaxacan food. The special flavor of each dish is an assembly and texture that cause new flavors on the palate.
A few steps from the church of San Matas Jalatlaco is the Katrinas bar, a place I really recommend to spend a great evening. Enjoy the famous mezcal (cactus alcohol) and tequila, in a friendly atmosphere with Mexican rhythms. Let yourself be carried away by the joy and friendliness of the staff, and the manager speaks English very well, and takes care of your stay.
You'll find Mexican pottery in all the markets and tourist shops in the country, and Oaxaca is no exception. Here you can admire clay work ranging from simple, childish models to large, sophisticated, royal figures. Around Oaxaca, you'll find a wide variety of shops and stalls selling this artwork, handmade by those who have learned the craft from their ancestors.
If you're traveling to Oaxaca, don't miss out on the chocolate. It's delicious! You can take a tour of a chocolate factory to see how it's is made and yes, there are tastings! Also, I recommend a trip to the market to try the local chocolate drink and some the local pastries. Trust me, you won't regret it!
Offering the best product in Oaxaca, with innovative dishes that recall tradition, Origen restaurant in downtown Oaxaca is a must for all foodies. You have to start with a good mezcal, and do not hesitate to ask for house recommendations. The menu changes with the seasons and available ingredients, which ensures a unique taste. When I went, I had "pumpkin squash and quintoniles and a touch of cheese: a magnificent dish in its simplicity! Beef sweetbread toast is a revelation to the palate, if it is on the menu: try it! For dessert I had the best of this year: a corn flan, ice cream, and cottage cheese accompanied with pineapple ... exquisite! Although if you find it hard to choose: they have dessert tasting! A great job in the kitchens from chef Rodolfo Castellanos and his team!
Mexico means corn, and in Oaxaca there's a great place to showcase it in all its glory: Itanoní Tortillería y Antojería. Tetelas, memelas, toast, pozole, atole and more, or eat a corn tortilla taco with beans, hoja santa, and fresh cheese. It's my favorite place in the entire state. Great prices and the essence of healthy, traditional Mexican cuisine.
Going through the Avenue of the Children Heroes in the Republic, we can find this small restaurant where the food is homemade and tasty. It is said that here is where they make the best black mole in Oaxaca. You cannot miss trying this plate, and the prices are good.
