Mesón Museo Ibérico Restaurant
(10)
There’s a few streets in the center of Mérida where you can find the majority of the bars are restaurants. They all have good prices and look great, but we chose Meseo Ibérico and I loved it! First of all, it has a big menu – both for lunch and dinner – that costs about 10 € and is complete. It includes a first dish, second dish, drink and desert. Many of the dishes offered are traditional, like the Extramaduran “migas,’’ which we opted for. We also had the famous seafood paella as a first dish, and it was great, especially for being so far away from Valencia. For the second dish, we had eggs with ham and hake with a flavorful sauce and salad. Fruit and rice pudding were our choices for desert. They serve very generous portions, almost too much food for dinner – but it’s all great. The “ migas” were spectacular. The service was good, fast and without any problems. We ate on the outside terrace. It was more than hot, but there’s also space to eat inside that’s cooler and more peaceful. I’ll definitely go back here next time I’m in Mérida.

Plaza de España

The Spanish Square in Merida is in the old city next to the Cathedral of Santa Maria and the city council. You'll almost inevitably end up there after spending a day visiting the many tourist attractions in Merida. It's also a good place to rest because there are a lot of terraces and several benches and trees.

Los Canchales
(5)
Los Canchales is a restaurant in Badajoz, where you can enjoy typical Extremaduran cuisine. It’s located in the street parallel to the Alféreces plaza, and it’s really good. There’s a bar area and a dining area in the restaurant, separated by doors. I’ve eaten here many times and the truth is that I didn’t enjoy my second dish the last time I was there. However, I’ve tried the rest of the dishes on the menu, and they’re all very good. The great Iberian meats, as well as the wine, is what stands out for me. There’s a calm atmosphere and the service is pretty good. It’s best to make a reservation to make sure you get a table.

Casa Benito Restaurant
(6)
Casa Benito Bar has a restaurant and this highly-recommended tavern is frequented by a lot of tourists. It's the ideal place for having some ham, a few glasses of wine, and having some delicious croutons and cheese del Casar. It's a small place with wooden tables and benches. There are lots of pictures depicting various objects, like bullfighting, and things like that are what make it a place that tourists love to go. I have not read good reviews of the restaurant's annex, but I do recommend this old bar with its wooden tables and stools, and endless walls decorated with old photos, all of which are related to the world of bullfighting. Have a plate of cured ham and "cremosito of Zuécar" toast smeared with wine. It may be super enjoyable for you. Casa Benito Bar is situated in the small market square in the center of Merida.

Pizzeria Wendy
(15)
Pizzeria Wendy is a very welcoming place. My wife and I ordered the goat cheese salad and it was great. For the second dish we got a BBQ pizza, which was also very good, and is artisan made. And for dessert we had the cheesecake with chocolate mousse, which was scrumptious. We were very successful thanks to minube. December 31, 2012.

Azcona
(15)
Azcona is one of the best restaurants in Badajoz. Located on the bank of the Guadiana, the restaurant serves a blend of Extremaduran and Portuguese cuisine, all using the freshest ingredients available. I recommend the squid in its ink, but fish and game dishes are also worth ordering. Just try it for yourself!

100 Montaditos

The number one- pork and cheese, the number two- ham with salmorejo, the number three- salmon with cream cheese, and so on all the way up to 100. There are a hundred sandwiches to choose from here so that everyone finds something that they like. The bread here is crispy and all of the sandwiches come with chips, along with a good beer, will be perfect for a good tapas session. All of their sandwiches are delicious. To try them all, you'd have to eat two sandwiches per day for fifty days. Let's get started.

Marchivirito
(3)
Marchivirito is a very cool restaurant with a huge terrace, but the best part is the food. The ham is sublime but the highlight for me was the steak tartar prepared right in front of you with hand-ground beef. That's what I tried, but the rest of the menu looked just as good. The value for the money is another plus.

La Rebotica Restaurant
(6)
This restaurant, in the center of Zafra, offers typical regional specialties such as local beef tenderloin, oxtail and various local vegetables. The cuisine is excellent, with good presentation and tasty dishes. The croquettes are also really spectacular. As for prices, starters begin at € 11 and main courses from € 14 to € 20. There is an extensive wine list. Besides the food, the restaurant is very cozy, with just a few tables and friendly service.

Jijona Ice Cream Shop

Often times you get up in the morning really hungry and you run to wherever you can get delicious food. The Jijona Ice Cream Shop is one of those places. They give you a little breakfast-sized coffee and some bread that's really good and they let you choose from different styles of preparation. I really loved the tomato with Burgos cheese!

Chamorro Restaurant
(4)
We stumbled upon Chamorro Restaurant right as we left the theatre. It's been situated next to the box office since April and it offers quality at a very good price. They have marinated salmon skewers with goat cheese, tuna tartare salad with tomato, earth bag porker sauce and the best Iberian ham, as well as foie gras and membrillo. The photos are all between 2.70 and 3.50 tapas. This was a great little discovery.

Meson la Fea
(16)
We ate very well at Meson la Fea. It's closed on Wednesdays. We drank a bottle of wine, ate a half serving of wonderful cheese, a salad, soup, and a grilled steak for two people and a coffee for 30 euros. For the locals, it's the place to go to dinner, which was a good guarantee for us. We finished dinner very happy.

La Despensa del Castuo Restaurant
(5)
Me and my husband stayed in Merida, on June 13. We wanted a place for tapas and almost everything was closed. The place "La Dehesa del Castuo" was the only one open, by our hotel. It was ideal. Next to the Roman Theatre and the sausages from Extremadura are delicious! As we were tired from all the walking we sat down at 18:30 pm and ordered 2 beers and some tapas. But the lady who attended us didn´t let us finish talking. She told us that the kitchen was closed. As it was hot it was like we were waiting for it to open the kitchen. We ordered more tapas and 2 drinks. Well ..... the drinks we served. The tapas dish almost flew. But as the meats and cheeses were delicious, the beer was cold, we were thirsty, hungry and had tired feet from walking, and everything around was closed, we had no choice but to stay there. The bad one was when coming back to our hotel, we saw a block of the street restaurants already open. It would be better if we had gone to the hotel to rest and then out to eat. Worth going there to buy products from Extremadura . To eat .......... better go to the lunch box in the corner.

Vinatería Pámpano

This is a place where wine-pairing takes on a life of its own and turns into a full sensory experience. Piedad, the owner, has many years of experience and is very passionate about Extremeño wines. Start the humble cayetana grape, which was originally used to produce alcohol but now lends its essence to the Bodegas Payva white which began our supper. It has notes of pineapple and mango, perfect for accompanying a salad of Iberian ham and figs. Piedad then told us about the little-known “umami” flavor. The pairing menu offers three plates and three wines and her guidance and information through the process was spot-on. If you want to enjoy a tasting and learn about the culture of wine, they’ve even created an elaborate color coding system: “Emotions and Sensations” with suggestions for irritated, passionate, fickle, and other emotions.
