Auvers-sur-Oise

Auvers sur Oise is a town with about 7000 inhabitants situated on the outskirts of Paris, about 3km roughly northwards. The town lies about 6-8 miles along the Oise River, which begins in Belgium and flows into the river Seine at the height of Auvers sur Oise. Most of the people are very attached to the river, with individual houses sitting adjacent to each other in front of the river banks being the most common layout. This image of houses glued to the river is part of the most picturesque village. Auvers is primarily a dormitory town not having any industrial activity and containing only a few shops and bars in the heart of the village. Only 13% of the villagers have a job within the village itself. Most visitors come to Auvers because of its importance in the history of painting. Pizarro, Van Gogh, Cezanne are names that relate directly to this town. There are several ways to get to Auvers, the most common is by car or by RER (Parisian commuter train). It is a beautiful place to visit at the weekend (many Parisians have here a second home to spend weekends etc.), and a particular possibility is to go by bike. This is personally what I did and I used to cycle along the river for several miles, visiting the center of Auvers, its church, the cemetery which houses the graves of Van Gogh and his brother Theo. It is okay to take your bike on the RER, it is permitted all day at the weekends.

Vincent Van Gogh Grave Site

Van Gogh's grave is the primary attraction of Auvers sur Oise. The town has approximately 7,000 inhabitants and is 30kms from Paris. Alongside Van Gogh's grave also lies the body of his brother, Theo. The village cemetery is next to the town. It is accessible from the same exit and is more or less 1 km from the centre. It is very easy to find as there are plenty of signs in the area to show the way. The tiny cemetery is surrounded by walls and is approximately 60 square meters. The cemetery has one level and to find the grave of Van Gogh just have to look for the small group of people .... He's on the left. Although Van Gogh's body lies in Auvers sur Oise, he had only been living there for a few months. He had come from the French Provence where he was admitted into a mental hospital. He settled in Auvers where, thanks to Theo, he met a famous doctor willing to welcome and help him (it is also possible to visit this house in Auvers sur Oise, which today has been converted into a restaurant). Due to his loneliness, Van Gogh committed suicide by shooting himself twice just a few months after arriving in the village. Six months after his brother Theo died.
