Harbors in Benicarló
Port of Benicarló
Benicarló, contrary to Peñíscola, is a town that hasn’t been interested in tourism. Fortunately for Benicarló, Peñíscalo has a small port, so many recreational boats must be tied in Benicarló. Besides the yachts, you will see many fishing boats (they have a big fish market, where they still auction the fish fresh from the sea). Next to the port there is a shipyard, where they build and repair boats of the area. The bar, restaurant and disco area is also very near.
Train Stations in Benicarló
Benicarló-Peñíscola Train Station
Benicarlo-Peniscola train station is situated in Benicarlo and is close to Peniscola. It is a small station with a café and a lift. At the exit of the station there are buses and taxis. Beware, because the buses that run between the train station and Peniscola only operate in the summer months. We arrived a day before they began so had to get a taxi which cost 12 € to our hotel, the Hotel Gran Peniscola.
Villages in Benicarló
Benicarló is located in Castellón, a few kilometers away from Peñíscola. It is not a very touristic place, but since it is close to Peñíscola and its beaches, many people use it as a base to move around the surrounding areas. We arrived by chance to the town, since we made a mistake with the bus and instead of going to Peñíscola we arrived to Benicarló. We went to the tourist office to explore a bit. Basically they recommended the church, the ancient convent of San Francisco, which is now where the Museum of the City is found. You can do the visit by foot. In front of the museum you can take the bus to Peñíscola.

San Bartolomé Church
This is the main monument in Benicarlo. It was completed in 1743, replacing the previous church. The Baroque façade has spiral columns on its sides. The slender tower is octagonal. It has a single nave on which stands a dome and eight side chapels, of particular interest the Chapel of San Antonio Abad and the Chapel of the Virgen del Carmen. The highlights of the works of art include a Nazarene, Jose Esteve Bonet, and various pieces of jewelry from the XVI century.

Every year, coinciding with the feast of St. Joseph in the Constitution Square, this noisy spectacle is celebrated. The first time you see it, you want to cover your ears, but I'm a good Basque so it is a pride thing.

Sailboat Ride
One of the most rewarding experiences that I had during my stay in the province of Castellon, was going on a sailboat ride between the ports of Peniscola and Benicarlo. We sailed along the coast, and so I got to see all the places I had visited on foot the previous day from a different angle. It was really fun and the capitan of the boat was very friendly. It was also my first time riding on a sailboat, which I loved.
