Hood River
Located on the Columbia River (which marks the border between the states of Washington and Oregon), about 90 minutes east of Portland, the village of Hood River is indeed dominated by the majestic Mount Hood. But it's the beer that makes this town worth visiting! I invite you to take a stroll through the charming streets, going pub to pub to sample the output of the various local breweries. It might be a good idea to stay the night here, as you won't be driving home afterwards...

Packer Orchards and Bakery
The Columbia River Gorge is one of America's largest pear growing regions, and prides itself in the abundance and quality of fruit it produces. The Hood River Fruit Loop is a self-guided 35 mile scenic loop, with stops at numerous farms, fruit stands, wineries, and vineyards to sample the bounty that Hood River County has to offer. Pick and choose your stops as you like, but Packer Orchards and Bakery (stop #13) is a wonderful place to check out. Specializing in jams and baked goods, it particularly appeals to the fruit lover with a sweet tooth. They offer in-season fruit (apples, pears, cherries, peaches, blueberries, apricots, and nectarines), baked goods like pies and cookies, and many jams....over 100 varieties! Many are set out for you to sample. It's cute farm stand with a lot of character, its worth a stop. They also sell their products at many Portland and surrounding area farmer's markets and online, but I loved stopping at the original stand.
