I spent my first two nights in Christchurch here as the other hostels were full. My flight arrived a midnight, and the Base has a 24-hour reception. Base Hostels are known throughout Australia and New Zealand for their nightlife, as they all have their own bar. The atmosphere is young and crazy. The best thing about this hotel is its location, 10 metres from the Cathedral and 50 from the InterCity bus stop. I'd recommend it only if you're a party lover and under 25.
This hostel is in a family home and it is an extraordinary place. The awesome atmosphere in this house so nice, just 20 meters from the sea, to or from the supermarket and the office of tourism. The owners are great people, they were travelers around the world when they were young. Sarah the owner is a very nice woman as well. You can not pay by credit card. The place is extremely cozy, with terrace, hammock, simple socializing as many people traveling alone here. My bedroom had 5 available bed. I highly recommended place for both travelers and couples traveling alone. They also have rooms with two beds or a king-size bed. My bedroom and was almost 25 NZ dollars, about 12 euros and a person.
As a hostel, it might perhaps not be the best YHA in New Zealand, as it is a bit small. However, it does enjoy an excellent location, just a few meters away from the sea with great views of the mountains, and is a 20 minute walk to see a colony of seals and 10 minutes from the town center.
An extraordinary Hostel in Mount Cook, belonging to YHA Hostelling International. This Hostel is of a great quality, wooden house, family atmosphere, great facilities, good kitchen, bedrooms, very clean bathrooms, and a place to socialize. Only 5 minutes walk from the tourist information centre and museum tribute to Edmund Hilary, its definitely a great place to explore the area. Lots of lone travellers, the views are spectacular.
AMazing Hostel YHA network of Hostelling International, stunning situation within 5 meters of water and with amazing views of the ocean and mountain, is in the ride, in front, from the town center and bus stop have a 15 minute walk, the place is very nice, clean and well equipped, and has oceanfront rooms.
The last night I spent in New Zealand, I slept in a hostel for backpackers called Jailhouse. It has recently become well-known. It is about 25 minutes walk from the train station and about the same from the center of town. It is an old jail, built in 1874. There are single, double, triple and quadruple rooms and family rooms with 5 beds. You can also get rooms with a double bed. There is a small theater upstairs, a kitchen and internet connection.
