Barcelos Walls: Porta Nova Tower

Between Largo da Porta Nova and Largo Dr. José Novais, Torre da Porta Nova was an integral part of the medieval walls surrounding the city. It is a National Monument of Portugal and is a fine example of medieval military architecture. It's the only surviving tower of the city walls (there were 3 that coincided with the main entrances). This imposing and sturdy square-based tower is built entirely of granite masonry, with walls 2.5 meters thick and is 4-stories high. It was built in the fifteenth century, although in the sixteenth century (after losing its defensive function) some decorative elements like a Renaissance cornice, gargoyles and windows were added.
