El Portalón

One of the things that surprise you the more before going in, is the historical building of the 15th Century with its beautiful façade and excellent location in downtown Vitoria.

Once inside, you will not be disappointed with the main dining room and various private rooms for family and business dinners.

The food is quite good, traditional Basque cuisine. I tried the duck (one of my favorite dishes) and it was very good. I was not surprised with the entrees; maybe I was expecting something more. But the wine is very good, something happens in this area that the wine tastes better here than in Madrid.

It was founded in the 15th Century as a coaching inn. The name “El Portalón” makes reference to the great oak entrance.

During the rehabilitation that took place in the fifties, the place became a restaurant.

It’s one of the most traditional restaurants in the city. The menu has traditional food and traditional wine from La Rioja.
