St Michael at the North Gate

2 reviews of St Michael at the North Gate

Small store below church

The name of this church is St. Michael at the North Gate. So, during its construction, the church was placed on the outside of Oxford. It is now in the center, on the pedestrian street Cornmarket. The church was built in 1040 and is today the oldest historical monument in the city. The bell tower is Saxon style. The Oxford martyrs were accused of being demons and burned on the side of the church, on what is now Broad Street. This place was then outside the city walls.

The door to their cell in the prison can still be seen inside the church.

It's the main church of the city of Oxford and is in a parish with St Martin and All Saints.
