Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens

This Orthodox Church, officially called the Annunciation Cathedral of Santa Maria, is popularly known as Mitropoli. It is located on the Square in Plaka Mitrópolis in the historic center of Athens. It has been under repair since the 1999 earthquake. Construction began in 1842 and it was consecrated in May 1862. The plant consists of three naves and inside are the tombs of two martyrs of the Greek Orthodox Church, killed by the Turks during their occupation: San Philothei and Patriarch of Constantinople, Gregory IV. On one side of the temple, we must not forget to visit a small Byzantine church
