Streets, squares and schools bear his name
In the upper area of the city is the monument dedicated to Diogo Cão, in the plaza of the same name, surrounded by gardens. The monument consists of a square granite pedestal base with the bronze statue of the XV century navigator and explorer of the west coast of Africa. Diogo Cao was born in Vila Real and his birthplace, on Praça Camilo Castelo Branco, is classified as Property of Public Interest. The city's streets, squares and schools bear his name.
