The Pita Spot, located in downtown Mystic, serves authentic Mediterranean food. The waitresses are incredibly friendly and are dressed in colorful skirts adorned with bangles and bells. If you do not know what something on the menu is they will gladly explain it to you. The La La Chicken, which is sold in a variety of sizes, is a crowd pleaser, and the kebabs, falafels, and grape leaves are amazing. I love to order the appetizer sampler because then you can try several of the amazing Lebanese dishes. If you have a larger party you can call ahead and the waitresses will save a table for you.
The Green Marble is a cafe in downtown Mystic that has been around for as long as I can remember. The Green Marble has casual indoor and outdoor seating areas that are strewn with reading material and games, which makes it a popular hang out for locals. They serve numerous coffee beans from all around the world, delicious bagels, and several delectable pastries. The Green Marble is a coffee addict’s heaven as they have locally roasted coffee beans from different regions and their menu describes the flavors and specialties of each coffee bean. The Green Marble also sells locally roasted coffee in bags that are designed in collaboration with a local illustrator. This is a perfect place to spend the day.
Open seasonally from September through December, B.F. Clyde's Cider Mill is the oldest steam powered cider mill in the US. Clyde's is really a hidden gem that draws tourists and locals alike. While the kids learn about making apple cider the adults could easily sneak some 'adult' hard apple cider - the kids will be none the wiser. Don't forget to stuff your face with their incredible apple treats (the donuts are my favorite) or purchase jams, jellies, and cider to enjoy throughout the year. Go ahead, have more than one, it's only open for a short time each year!
Five Guys is a favorite stop for a fresh, made to order fast food burger. There are 15 different toppings and numerous options, such as cheeseburgers, two burger patties, and bacon, to customize your burger to perfection. There are also options for vegetarians including grilled cheese or vegetable sandwiches. You'll find peanuts in the shell throughout the restaurants as a free snack to enjoy with your burger. While waiting (and munching on peanuts) listen to the staff while they call back orders to the cooks - it is great entertainment. Don't forget to order a side of Cajun Style fries. They are delicious!
The Captain Daniel Packer Inne, known as DPI by locals, is one of my favorite bars and restaurants in downtown Mystic, Connecticut. DPI is over 250 years old and was built by Captain Daniel Packer. DPI is now a local favorite restaurant that has two sections: the downstairs pub and the upstairs restaurant, with the restaurant being fancier and having a different menu than the pub. The pub menu is incredibly delicious, so be sure to come hungry and arrive early, as the cozy space fills up quickly. Try the Almond Crusted Goat Cheese Medallions for an appetizer and don't forget to substitute sweet potato fries for the side with your meal - they are perfection.
The famous Mystic Pizza from the favorite 1988 movie starring Julia Roberts is located right in downtown Mystic. Open since 1973, Mystic Pizza is as big a draw to Mystic as the Mystic Seaport or Mystic Aquarium. Stop by to order one of their famous pizzas, grab a slice of pizza pie to go, or order online to enjoy your pizza back in your hotel room or apartment rental. Because of the movie, Mystic Pizza, this restaurant is one of the most famous pizza parlors in the US. This is a great restaurant to stop for lunch, dinner, or take-out when visiting other sites in Mystic, Connecticut.
Tio Juan's Margaritas Mexican Restaurant is a great spot to enjoy happy hour after work or to celebrate your birthday. Margaritas is a large restaurant with several floors - the first floor is a restaurant and the second is a bar that has a large outdoor patio. I like the indoor decorations and the Tex-Mex food served is a crowdpleaser. I always order the Original Grilled Fajitas, which comes out of the kitchen sizzling on a black pan and come loaded with piles of tasty fixings. Another favorite are the chimichangas, which just ooze with cheese and delicious sauce. Don't forget to order a margarita with a salted rim!
An ice cream shop since the 1800's, Mystic Drawbridge Ice Cream remains a favorite ice cream spot in downtown Mystic. Mystic Drawbridge Ice Cream uses cream from a local dairy and only the freshest and best ingredients to make their delicious flavors. They have classic flavors, like vanilla, chocolate, or pistachio, to original flavors such as Mystic Mud, and SeaportSaltySwirl. For those who want something more than just a simple scoop of ice cream, Mystic Drawbridge creates Sundaes such as Peaches n' Cream, Caramel Lovers, or Brownie Overload. There is something for every ice cream lover here. Stop by to watch the Mystic River Bascule Bridge go up to let boats through while enjoying your ice cream.
I know it seems unusual to suggest eating out at a grocery store, but stay with me, they have great food! McQuade's Marketplace has a huge section of prepared food, as well as a large menu to order from and eat in their small restaurant. This is a popular, budget-friendly option for people working in the area or travelers seeking a quick meal on the go. All of the food is made from scratch and there are plenty of options for meat-lovers, vegetarians, and even vegans. They also have delicious baked goods including cakes, donuts, and cookies. Anyone with a sweet tooth will rejoice!
The Engine Room had such great ratings, and they were all truthful. I recently visited for their boozy brunch and enjoyed everything about it. The atmosphere was fun and relaxed, the staff friendly, and the food delicious. The open-plan kitchen was also a fun touch, as you could see the chefs preparing the meals. The highlight of this outstanding brunch for me was the individual Dutch apple pancake. Forget everything else on the menu and order this without hesitation. The cornbread is also really delicious. Do make reservations or be prepared for a wait, as they are very popular.
