The Great Beach of Saint-Jean-de-Monts, which can be accessed from the city center, stretches over 8 kilometers. It is bordered by the Esplanade del Mar, a very pleasant place to walk along at any time of day. This beach is considered to be one of the most beautiful of the Costa de la Luz. The city participates in a project of sustainable development to preserve the natural spaces. Besides lounging in the sun, you can go to the Yacht Club for sailing. If you prefer to keep your feet on the ground, you can choose beach volleyball competitions, or for any of the fitness activities are organized regularly. And if you come with children, do not hesitate to participate in the activity "little horses". At sunset, I recommend going to the dock: you will feel at the end of the world.
Odyssea is primarily the Tourist Office of Saint-Jean-de-Monts. Here you can get all kinds of useful information to help you to plan visits. The office is full of offers and events throughout the year! There are maps and information brochures available here, and maps of various tourist destinations, with timetables and fares of the methods of transport. Odyssea is in the promenade. The building is easily seen, because of its modern architecture comprising of large windows. But Odyssea is also an auditorium and an exhibition hall where you can find contemporary artworks such as photographs, paintings or sculptures. Furthermore, Odyssea is also the year round headquarters for professional exhibitions and trade shows which are open to the public.
The marshes of Saint-Jean-de-Monts play an important role in the history of the city. In fact, they were used to irrigate the fields and to extract salt. The Tourist Office organizes guided tours, or you can take a tour on the water in a canoe or dinghy. The dinghy is a boat that looks like a large boat with sails, but it has oars. You can take a short trip to discover the fauna and flora, or follow the salt route to visit the salt mines. During my visit I saw herons! You can also go to meet the "chaumeurs," the craftsmen who built the thatched roofs of the houses (known as bourrines). And in summer you can attend various events such as racing yawl in rivers. In the Tourist Office you can find the schedule for these events.
The forest of Saint-Jean-de-Monts is situated next to Parée Jesus. You can explore it either on foot, by bike or on horseback. There is a bike rental place located just next to Parée Jesus. They offer several tours. The first is called "jogging loop," a loop of 5 miles for those who like to run. The second circuit is the "lookout", which lasts for 30 minutes and leads to a view point with a wonderful view. In addition to this place, you can see the bay, the golf course and the city on one side, and the marshes of the other. The viewpoint has a top bank which you have to climb if you want to sit, like when we were kids and sat with the world at our feet. And, if you are afraid of getting lost in the forest, you can rent a GPS from the Tourist Office!
Along the 15 miles of beach of Saint-Jean-de-Monts you can find the Grande Plage, but there are other smaller beaches which are more wild. Davière Beach is one of them. In this protected area, you can admire the big dunes where thistles grow. It is not monitored, so it is not advisable to swim there, but it has another advantage: This beach is famous for fishing molluscs such as clams in the Mediterranean, which is then sauteed with butter and herbs. It is a specialty of the city. So, if you visit Davière beach when the tide is low you can see many people looking in the sand for shellfish.
Saint-Jean-de-Monts is an enviable 20 kilometers of beaches sloping downwards to the sea. The sand is beautifully fine and the sea is calm. The flora of this place makes it an oasis of endless dunes facing the turquoise sea. Relaxation and tranquility that are breathed in Saint-Jean-de-Monts only break with the sound of waves. This place is special for families to enjoy as they have all the space you want to play while there are checkpoints. The little tourist traffic has made Saint-Jean-de-Monts a pristine environment. Nearby, you can play golf, fishing, hiking or take a bike ride. Leisure opportunities here are multiple!
The Church of San Juan Bautista is situated in the Church Square in the city center, 5 minutes away from the sea. It is surrounded by traditional shops, restaurants and bars. It is a lively place. In fact, there are lot of nearby markets and concerts are regularly held here. This church was built in the 12th Century and has undergone several renovations in the 17th, 19th and 20th Centuries. It was originally a chapel that inspired the name of the city. During the Wars of Vendée it was destroyed as a sign of opposition to the government which was then in power. In the early nineteenth century it was rebuilt. Because it has undergone much reconstruction work, its architectural style is very eclectic. Inside, you can see the beautiful high altar, with its canopy and pulpit, dating back to the 15th Century.
The coast of Saint-Jean-de-Monts has been arranged in such a way so that the promenade offers a pleasant stroll for tourists who can go either on foot or by bicycle, enjoying the beach and the sea breeze. There is a bike rental place. They are ideal for family outings. It is a dynamic area, full of restaurants, bars and shops. You can make a stop at a bar or restaurant with a terrace, the one you like to enjoy the scenery. The ride is even nicer at sunrise, or at sunset when the bay is losing its color like a paint pigment. But what I really advise you do is to head towards the dock. I love these places, they make you feel like you're at the end of the world!
The Parée Jesus is a forest playground that is open from April to September. Here, you can enjoy the fresh air. There is also the possibility of arranging tennis lessons, archery or starting an adventure with the tree and Adventure activities. The latter of these consist of paths between trees with hanging bridges, zip lines (one that is 350 meters), vines or suspended scales. There is a special route for children called "Awaken your feet", a sporty and educational journey. Archery can be started from beginner, or to train at distances of 5-25 m, and is available for ages 6 and over. There are 5 hard tennis courts, 6 clay and 2 indoor. You can book via the Internet or by phone, recommended in summer. It is a fun and unusual place, but you can also use GPS to go for walks in the woods, on foot or by bicycle. Reserve the bikes earlier in the Tourist Office.
A nice big beach like this makes you eager to have fun! You can relax and enjoy the excitement. There is something for everyone. I personally discovered the pleasures of the sea, enjoyed kayaking and kite-surfing. It's towards the nautical base of Saint-Jean-de-Monts. It's easy to find, about 10 minutes drive from the city centre on Avenue de l'Estacade, leading to the Grande Plage. There are courses, or you can rent a boat, attend open sessions or practice. It's a nautical base where anyone over 8 years can swim. In addition to ocean activities, there are also things to do on the 15 kilometre long beach! You can try land sailing, a city specialty. And between courses, you can stop at the nautical base bar, open from April to September, for refreshments on the terrace while watching the sea. What caught my attention were the catamaran or trimaran excursions to the Ile d'Yeu and Noirmoutier or the coast, with a duration of between 2 and 6 hours.
Saint-Jean-de-Monts' golf course features 18 holes. The course offers a fantastic journey, and is one of the most beautiful in all of France. In fact, it was built in the dunes along the coast between the beach and the forest. There are 9 holes in the woods and 9 holes in the dunes. It is open throughout the year, for people who just want to see the course and for serious golfers. There are individual and group classes for all ages. For example, you can choose the package "First Swing", valid for 6 months. You can also choose to do a course for beginners or advanced. For students and children, there are discounted rates on Wednesdays and Saturdays. You can have a rest from swinging on the lovely terrace restaurant, which overlooks the ocean, and recharge before heading back out to play!
