The Corsaires de Retz is a wooden sailboat with two masts that organizes trips to sea. Docked at the pier l'Herminier Commander, it offers cruise trips. The tours can last for 2 hours, 4 hours or all day. Some cruises last for 2 or 3 days and go to the Island of Yeu, the Belle Ile or Houat Island. When you leave the port, you can see the small towns that dominate the coves and the wild beaches. What I appreciated most was the silence that reigns at sea, only being disturbed by the sound of the waves. The ship has a dining room with good coffee and also serves meals. It also has cabins where you can rest on longer trips. But what will appeal to adults and children is the ability to go to the command post and steer the boat for a few minutes, thus becoming captain for a day!
Without doubt, the Atlantic coast of Pays de la Loire is very varied. The perfect example is Pornic, a beautiful fishing village built on a rocky crag. Its beaches, headlands and its docks seem as though they have been painted perfectly. The Castle of Pornic is known as Bluebeard's Castle, giving the place a unique sense of legend. It is full of nooks and narrow stairs. The covered market in Pornic is one of the biggest attractions of this town and you can buy typical local cuisine. There are various cultural events throughout the day, especially in the summer. It is on the Jade coast, a charming coastal town full of warmth, that makes you feel at home. The green color of the meadows is reflected in the sea water. There is a hiking trail that allows you to travel around the coast towards the sea. Be sure not to miss this!
The Fouquet and Galipaud stairs are behind the Casino, near the old port and the Fraiseraie. They are a set of small narrow streets that leave from the harbor and go to the top of the city where the church is. From the top of the stairs there is a magnificent view of the harbor. These streets are among the oldest in the city, and can be seen in old photographs. They are valued for their historical aspect and typicality of the time period in which they were built. The walls are covered with flowers. I suggest going for a walk there along the harbor and returning by way of the Noëveillard Beach. Or go after enjoying the Fraiseraie ice cream while enjoying a meal at one of the many restaurants located along the staircase. You can also take a guided tour which can be booked at the Tourist Office. The 2.5 hour "Streets and Roads¨ tour will teach you about the history of the city and its streets.
Pornic strawberry is one of the gastronomic specialties of Pays de la Loire. The mild temperature makes it perfect to grow this red fruit. So much so that Pornic strawberry has a supreme category and a high reputation in Europe. The cultivation and harvesting of strawberries has been a traditional family craft and still retains the unique characteristics of the fruit. Acres and acres of strawberries under high tunnels allow the provisioning of outlets of quality strawberries for much of the year. The control of the processing chain (production, manufacturing and marketing) makes this a top quality product. You can see red and green fields full of flavor. Do not miss the chance to taste this and enjoy the flavor of this fruit from the city.
This beach has fine golden sand, a small cove of sheltered waters of a deep blue color, perfect for swimming. It is in the city center, close to the marina. To get there, just find the harbor promenade that passes in front of the ice cream parlor The Fraiseraie. It has disabled access. In the summer, there are rescue services. Noëveillard beach has a children's club and you can also do a sailing course or rent a boat. The beach is equipped with showers and toilets. When the tide is low, you can fish for seafood on the rocks. In the vicinity of the beach you will find restaurants, most notably Villa Noë, an irresistible place with a wonderful terrace with great views.
Mousseaux's Barrow is the oldest monument in the city of Pornic. It is a relic dating from the prehistoric Neolithic, around 6000 years ago. The megaliths are the first architectural buildings constructed by man in Europe. Some nomadic peoples began to settle, and this type of monument displayed the ownership of the territories. The Mound is high in the hills of the city, allowing them to dominate the landscape. They were Formerly used to worship the dead, the grave of the leaders and their families. The Mousseaux is in good condition, but the outside part is partially lost. Its discovery shows a long human presence in the area, by the good temperature, greenery and ocean. You can stop by and have a look at all the different burial chambers.
The Pornic thalassotherapy center is located only minutes along the coastal route. It is situated in a protected cove and is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the views of wild beaches, the ocean and the island of Noirmoutier on the horizon. The spa includes a gym, fitness room, two heated saltwater pools, sauna and steam room. You can participate in various sport activities, assisted by a coach, during gym sessions. In between treatments you can have massages with oils and hot stones, which relax you and make you feel as if you are in paradise! The hotel has all the modern amenities any customer can wish for. The complex includes several restaurants, like La Source, a gourmet restaurant, and Terrasse, offering organic products. The Pornic golf course is an 18 hole course and 19 practice holes, of which 5 are covered. It's a 5 minute drive from the city centre. The green spaces are gorgeous, with lovely woods, greens and artificial lakes. I drove the entire length in the golf cart, and only for this did I decided to return often. The interesting thing about this place is that it's managed by the community. Therefore, it offers attractive packages for adults and children. A 9 hole game for an adult costs 26euros in low season and 36 euros in high (April 1 to September 30). Under age 21 and students under 25, there is a 50% discount. The atmosphere is friendly, the grounds are fabulous and the course is very enjoyable for both beginners and experienced players.
