This is a large pub in the north of Guildford, but still within the city. Its size is impressive, especially for where it is, which is not very busy. But it is obviously successful (if not, it would not open) and there are not many pubs and restaurants around. It is more spacious than a typical English pub. It is nicely decorated although perhaps not as crowded as we are accustomed to. It opens at 11am and the menu offered is broad and succulent. There are burgers, sandwiches, typical baked dishes ("pork pie" for example) and assorted desserts. The dishes cost about 6 pounds, but for lunch there is a deal of £8 for two meals (which individually cost 5-6 pounds). The bar has a friendly and quiet atmosphere, although I must admit that I have not been then while a game of rugby or soccer was playing. I guess then that shouts abound, with drunks and the occasional expletive, but honestly, the times I've gone it has been very quiet. In the back there are several pool tables and in the rest of the restaurant you can choose between low tables with chairs and small round table with stools. Pints of beer cost around £3.50.
This pub is situated in the center of Guildford, in England. It's a pub, but it does not meet all the characteristics of a typical English pub like you might imagine. Firstly because it is huge. It's a great venue with multiple levels. There are many different areas, such as an area with armchairs (the most comfortable and full of young people at the weekend), an area with stools along the long bar, and an area of tables. Throughout the pub there are different screens which broadcast sporting events. The pub is nice and offers reasonable prices. One detail that many visitors take advantage of is the fact that it has free WiFi for customers. At most weekends, the pub comes to life and offers many themed nights and festivals that draw in the crowds.
Chez Gérard is a chain of French cuisine restaurants all over the UK. It's a good place for cheap eats because they offer good deals ont their website (for example, two meals for the price of one). Without one of these offers, it might seem a bit expensive for the amount of food that you get. We were a small group of four and the salad was really the best part. The seafood entree was very small and a little bland and the fish couscous only had 2 small filets and not too much flavor. The service was good but we were the only ones in the restaurant. It was about 15 pounds per person.

It opened the 1st restaurant in London and has opened more than 90 stores worldwide, in countries like Egypt, Turkey and Australia. The secret of their success, they say on their website, is that they always serve quality food using natural ingredients at very affordable prices. Another good point is that you can enjoy the same "Wagamama experience" both in London and Dublin. The main ingredient common to almost all dishes are noodles, they are in soup, with sauces or alone and cooked in different ways. The wine menu is extensive and I recommend not looking too hard the first time you go as it will take several minutes. To get an idea, most dishes on the menu are entrees that are enough for a hungry adult. Wagamama kitchens are open to guests and you can see how they prepare all the Asian delicacies. There are also have several Asian beers to drink.
Every Monday, the Slug and Lettuce restaurant, a British chain of restaurants, offers its menu at half price. So we went there for dinner to make the most of the offer. As England is such an expensive country, we could not refuse. We enjoyed the food, but we ordered a chicken curry, which came out incredibly spicy. The atmosphere is that of a pub with slot machines. You have to order your food at the bar, they do not cater to the table. It's a little weird, but it works that way in most of the pubs in England. The roast beef was very good, and well cooked, but the burger was cooked thoroughly, and didn´t have much flavor. The dishes are well presented and overall it is a nice place to eat. On the menu you can find original dishes such as goat cheese and pumpkin lasagna, mushroom risotto, and a delicious fish pie made of leeks. In the end, it cost us about 25 pounds for three people, a main course each, and two beers per person. Very good for the place, knowing that in a Burger King three menus cost about the same.
The White Lyon is situated just off of Guildford in Worplesdon Road. It is a large red brick house which is typical of the region of Surrey. In general, the pubs were great because they also acted as Bed & Breakfast for truckers. Now this activity has stopped due to the personnel costs which were involved, but the ground floor still functions as a typical English pub. Inside there are pool tables. The road in front is busy but often people sit outside drinking and it does not seem to bother anyone. At the back there is a small garden which is more enjoyable during the summer months. They open at noon and offer a traditional English menu, with sausage, lamb and fish and chips. On Thursday night there are concerts, which are quite successful. They are usually blues/ rock style, with an acoustic guitar. The prices are pretty cheap. If you are looking for a cheaper place, stay there if you want to eat well in a well decorated place.
The Ship Inn is a hidden gem. It's situated in Worplesdon Road, Guildford as you are leaving the city. At first glance, it is just like any other pub. It has an incredible atmosphere. It is special, because the owner married a Thai lady who makes amazing food. I recommend that if you're going with a group you reserve beforehand because this lady is alone in the kitchen and sometimes she has to serve 6 or 8 people, so service may be a little slow, but the food is worth it. The fried starters are a selection of delicacies that you can share. You can order between two or three plates, they are handmade and I highly recommend them. Then I tried the chicken pad tai, which is also amazing, and some beef dishes. Each time, it is very good and very fresh. It costs about 12 pounds per person, although you can eat a pad tai for 6 pounds. You can also order by phone, if you are close by, the delivery service is free.
Worplesdon Place is a great country pub, located off of Guildford, Woking way. You're already out in nature and it's generally not to difficult to throw a nighttime party. This place offers a wide variety of grilled meats at noon on Sundays and it's called the Sunday Roast. When the weather's good it's held outdoors. The current offer includes a two course menu, first and second dishes for around 8 pounds from Monday to Saturday, especially when you to come eat before 6:30 p.m. For dinner, Monday to Thursday you can have a special menu for 10 pounds. I recommend these menus because the bill can get quite expensive. The pub also has an extension which is now a Premier Inn hotel. To stay there you have to have a car, because it passes a bus in front maybe every half hour, and you're away from the train going to Guildford. But it is a perfect place to come for lunch.
In Guildford there are two really good Thai restaurants. One is the Thai Terrace, which can be quite expensive, and the other is the Rumwong. They belong to the same owner, but in the latter restaurant you don't have to pay the views of the city. It also has a more intimate environment, but the place was really busy. Too bad they don't take reservations after 6:30 p.m. We tried to go at 7 and were told we would have to finish eating before 9. The service was very fast, if not a little rushed, but the food was awesome. The dishes are beautifully presented and they make you want to order everything. We tried the fishcakes, some picanes, and second a duck dish and a delicious scallops and shrimp both. Accompanied with a pad thai shrimp also loved. He left around 40 pounds for two with drinks. I highly recommend.
The Parrot Inn is a pub which is just off Guildford and accessible by bus or a short 30 minute walk by the river. The food itself was not great. I tried a lamb burger with mint, roasted salmon and goat cheese baked tart. The family running the place, however, was very nice and helpful, and it was a good place to have a drink at the end of the walk. We spent about 25 pounds between three people for the food and then 2 pounds for cafe. There is a good selection of local and seasonal beers like Surrey Hills which is produced in the area. The menu attempts to change seasonally and it wasn´t bad, just not unforgettable. There is a terrace for sunny days and a very classic decor on the interior.
