In early July, by the banks of the Miño in northern Portugal, one can savor Atlantic sardines at the party celebrating Ancora fishermen that is held every year around this time. It involves several restaurants, craft merchants and natural products of this region, on the northern coast of Portugal. The roasted and grilled meat, green wine and beer were delicious! The service was exceptional on the terrace of the Restaurant Verde Pinho. To end the night, nothing beats a caipirinha with views over the sea.
The Gualterianas are the most significant festivals of the city of Guimarães and are held during the 1st week of August in honor of St. Gualter (patron saint of the city). What caught my attention was the lighting of the city, thousands of small colored lights adorned the streets, monuments and even the gardens of the central squares of the city. The loveliest image was that of the gardens of Long Avenue Republic of Brazil with the Church of San Gualter the background. Among the most notable of these parties are the San Gualter procession Sunday, horse racing, floral carpets, concerts and festivals, fashion show at Largo da Oliveira, historical parade with horse carriages, fireworks, craft market, bullfights, livestock fair ... During those days a lot of atmosphere in the streets and of course, no lack of typical barracks where the famous Farturas take over Lisbon.
The truth is, I'm not entirely sure if the day I visited Viana (July 18) they were celebrating a holiday in the city (I think not), but in the Republic Square I was lucky to see a folk group, dressed in their typical costumes, which was offering regional dances and music at noon. It was a beautiful day, the place was bustling, the terraces were crowded, and this increased the activity and added a dose of color to the beautiful setting, so I loved it. To mark the feast day of Carmen, on the Sunday closest to July 16, a pilgrimage takes place at the Penha Mountain in honor of the Virgin. Early in the morning, a procession proceeds to the Virgen del Carmen from the Grotto of Our Lady of the Carmen (at the southern end of the mountain) to the Sanctuary, where Mass is celebrated. Then there is a popular pilgrimage in which people make a picnic to eat in the picnic areas and there is dancing and singing. At around 17h, the procession takes place in reverse, returning Mary to her cave. There is a market which sells typical biscuits and fruits.
In an environment such as the medieval historical centre, the Medieval Fair was celebrated here this weekend in this beautiful Portuguese town with large Spanish and Portuguese crowds. These meetings or fairs which also happen in Galicia, and in the towns of Baiona, Orense and Pontevedra, are distinguished by their medieval atmosphere in a unique setting with its inhabitants are dressed in period costume and in this case in the popular Republic Square Area, surrounded by a variety of craft stalls, wines and spirits, typical local cuisine, exhibits, paintings and rugs, puppets for children and children's games from the time. Here are some of the photos I took so you can appreciate the environment and get to know a little more about Portuguese culture and a tradition which happens to be so similar to ours.
Every year since 1893, during the second half of August, the festival of the Virgin of Agony is celebrated, reaching its peak on August 20, which is the feast of the patron saint of the city. There is an extensive program of activities: a craft fair, streets carpeted with flowers, dance contests and regional dress contests, band contests, giants and big-heads parade, fireworks, etc..
I am a regular at these kind of parties and/or medieval markets held not only in Galicia but also in northern Portugal, as is the case in the famous "Terras de Cervaria". This market is gaining popularity every year with more people and more stands and craft stalls. Besides the craft stalls, I also noticed typical masks used in the carnival of Venice. Of note in this wonderful medieval market are several historical reenactments, games, musical and artistic activities, shows and the falconry. In the stands you can find items made of leather, handicrafts made of various materials, aromatic wax that will not melt, handmade sweets and treats, decorations, tiaras, jewelery and stalls with delicacies.
The Cod Festival is primarily a gastronomic festival set in a large tent in a space that's about 2000 square meters and has a collection of bars and restaurants in the area which exhibit their food and the preparation of cod in different and varied ways. Much appreciated not only by the Lusitanians, but by the Galicians as well. The festival goers are entertained by a group of bagpipers and the music was mainly popular Galician music, probably by the influx of Spanish to the festival and the proximity of our culture. There were also tours of the wine route Alvariño to wineries or wine house Alvariño and Film Museum. Some of the restaurants participating in the food festival are: Tasquinha do Chiquera, Mini-zip, Real, Sabino, Council of Melgaço, with its cod stuffed with lamprey and Chafarix Alvariño tasty cod, cod stew, cod tacos etc.. So all kinds of food related to the world of cod. Tourists visiting the area can also obtain information from the festival about the National Park and the Sanctuary of Our Lady Da Peneda.
In a large tent near the banks of the river Lima in Expolima, on the 5th,6th and 7th of this month the gastronomic event took place. It is around the theme of pork and Sarrabulho delicacies, typical food from northern Portugal and especially in this area, a kind of stew made with pork and different spices which give that typical flavor. One specialty is rice with Sarrabulho and the truth is that there were so many people that it was impossible to eat inside the tent. We could not miss the dessert, the typical "Leite Creme" a kind of caramelised custard with toasted sugar. There are also about 30 stalls available for everything with crafts, furs, shoes, fashion, deli, wine, etc. And above all very good food sponsored by the area's famous restaurant, including the restaurant "Camelo", Quinta de San Sebastian. In short, a very full weekend filled with exhibits, food, rides, music and even a circus located on the idyllic river Lima.
On the occasion of this exhibition was medieval style on Saturday 24th in the Portuguese town of Monçao Alvariños famous for its wines. Among other activities, there was a market with a mixture of stands with handicrafts and typical of the era, all in the central square and gardens of Deu-la-Deu. Among the exhibits was a small domestic animals pen, pony rides, children's games, plays and much more. The entertainment consisted of theatrical representation swordfights including folkloric entertainment and even a show with snakes. My visit to this great valley of northern Portugal, famous for its wines, food and spas.
I recently visited the Feast of the Wind fesitval, where there are many events, lots of entertainment and shows held in the historic center of the Portuguese city of Viana do Castelo. During the celebration, also know as the Festim Medieval, the townspeople dress in medieval clothes, as is usual in such fairs. In the Republic Square, there is a puppet theater, belly dancing, medieval music, games for children and falconry birds. There is also an excellent sculpture exhibition on display in the old building of Pacos do Concello (town hall). There are also flea market type stands, with a variety of items for sale including crafts and leather as well as typical local cuisine including desserts and drinks.
Yet another they celebrated in a huge tent from the 4th til the 13th The Festival of the Sea and Sardina. In a beautiful seaside setting with large numbers of visitors. This festival is dedicated to products and services related to the sea, about 40 booths available for everything from crafts, fishing, fashion, wine, etc.., And above all very good food sponsored by the restaurants in the city, including some famous restaurants of Viana de Castelo, a town about 12km from Vila Praia de Ancora. Speaking of food could don't miss this event Queen "sardine", prepared in various ways and a variety of seafoods such as octopus, beef, mussels ... One year I couldn't resist its rich cuisine, entertainment and exhibitions as interesting as those that have to do with his life and history, reflected in old photographs that were presented on the occasion of this great event.
