Villages in Szentendre
Szentendre
(2)
This small village on the banks of the Danube is just lovely. It's about one hour by train from Budapest, and even though it's a tourist destination, it didn't seem as crowded as the capital. It was also very cold in winter, but the cold also gave it a special pageantry. Be careful when buying train tickets, since there are two different trips and therefore two different tickets, as the ticket woman explained to us while pointing at a comprehensive map. The village is a collection of various types of domestic architecture, but mostly it's a haven for artists and craftsmen. Half a day is more than enough to enjoy it.
Villages in Lenti
Lenti
Lenti is a town near the Hungarian border with Slovenia - they are barely five miles apart. During our stay, in Nemesnép was our main point. It is a small but beautiful and flowered city with various figures made of flowers which adorn the streets. It is known for its hot springs. Just outside the city there is a large area in which there are six pools of different sizes, depth and temperature - great for those who wish to have a spa treatment or just have a picnic. Also there are small shops where you can by snacks, drinks and a delicious dessert of chocolate. If you do not fancy this there is the option of two restaurants. There are no photographs to be taken in the swimming pool, in order to the respect the privacy of customers, which incidentally are plentiful. However what caught my attention was an old cemetery with no fences in the center of the city located in a splendid garden. Perhaps one of the things that caught our attention when travelling to this city was watching the exit or entrance to villages we passed through a small wooden buildings and towers, within which there were benches and a cross outside. Over time we learned that the bells had these constructions in order to call a neighbours meeting or to warn if there was some misfortune. It was a great experience.
Villages in Tokaj
Balatonudvari y Tokaj
In the northern shore of Lake Balaton (approx.100 kms. Budapest) there are a series of villages that are there for a variety of reasons. A Tihany unites itself curiously with Balatonudvari, and here the romantic cemetery consists of more than sixty carved limestone tablets with a heart shape. Nobody knows why the hearts are there, since no other cemetery in the country is like this. It is easy to get to by road(which skirts around the lake) and rail, housing is very affordable if you choose any of the cottages. You can directly negotiate price with the ownder. Another nearby destination is the wine region of Tokaj foothills, northeast of the country, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As its a small town, Tokaj is very walkable, and wine, especially the variety Aszú tasting is a must. Note to drivers: it is a white wine, that "goes down" very well, but "hits" more than it seems ...
